Documentation of the plant species in ex situ cultivation and their re-introduction into nearly natural habitats: Institute of Biology / Geobotany and Botanical Garden of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, Ex situ garden of the Biosphärenreservat Mittelelbe (Biosphere reserve Middle Elbe river) and Brockengarten in the National Park Harz.
In 1979 the Botanical Garden at Halle started as one of the first Botanical Gardens an ex situ cultivation program for protecting and propagating endangered plants. Three main directions of ex situ cultivation were followed: 1. Propagation of endangered plants and their re-introduction into the wild. 2.Establishment of an ex situ collection in the Botanical Garden. 3. Establishment of gardens particularly dedicated to the protection of endangered plant species.
Since 1979 the three above-mentioned institutions keep many species in ex situ cultivation: 38 species (Halle), 31 species (Biosphärenreservat Mittelelbe) and 6 species (Brockengarten). Eleven species were successfully re-introduced and two species were kept away from extinction in Germany. This program was documented.
